Almost everything about the shape happens to suit a Kathmandu apartment. The back is low — ours is 80 centimetres against a conventional 85 to 90 — so you can see across the sofa to the window behind it, and the room reads as deeper than it is. The arms are slim, often ten centimetres against a rolled arm's twenty-five, which returns thirty centimetres of usable seat inside the same footprint. And the legs are visible and tapered, so the floor runs underneath the sofa instead of stopping at it. A floor you can see is a floor that looks larger.

Where it is genuinely worse. A low back gives less head support. If somebody in your household watches television for three hours in the evening with their head back, they will feel the missing ten centimetres and they will keep feeling it. Slim arms are also less comfortable to lie against. This is a shape that is excellent to sit in and only adequate to sprawl in, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.

Fabric is doing most of the work. With so little structure and ornament, the cloth is the whole character. Boucle is the classic choice and it is a good one — the looped texture hides light marks and holds colour under sunlight better than a flat weave. Its single enemy is claws: a cat will find those loops within a week and pull them into runs that cannot be repaired invisibly. If there is a cat in your house, take the oatmeal linen instead. We say this to everybody.

The leg is not a detail. On this shape the leg is visible from every angle and it is where a cheap version gives itself away — a stubby, thickly stained cone instead of a slim tapered leg in properly finished timber. Ours are turned from sal and finished in natural oak tone, black, or walnut. It is a small part of the cost and most of the impression.

Prices and sizes. Three-seaters start at NPR 78,000 and run to about 1,25,000 depending on fabric. Standard is 200 by 80 centimetres, and because these rooms are usually tight, sizing to your exact wall costs nothing. Tape the footprint on your floor for two days before you order — with a low sofa, the thing you are really buying is the space around it.
