Custom & made-to-order sofas

Custom is not an upgrade here. It is how we work.

Changing the size of a sofa does not cost us anything meaningful, so we do not charge for it. If your room needs a 172 centimetre three-seater instead of a 180, we build 172. If you want the depth increased by five centimetres because your husband is tall, we increase it. If you want leather on the centre piece and fabric on the two singles, that is a normal Tuesday.

What people actually ask us to change

• Length and depth — the most common request by a wide margin, usually because of a door, a window or a staircase.
• Seat height — raised for older parents who find a low seat hard to get out of, lowered for a room with a low ceiling.
• Arm style — slim tailored arms instead of rolled, to buy back thirty centimetres of usable seat in a small room.
• Firmness — a firmer seat than our standard, which we do by taking the 40-density support layer right through.
• Storage — a hinged lid over a lined box under the chaise or the seat. This has to be designed into the frame; it cannot be added later.
• Mixed materials — leather where hands and heads touch, fabric everywhere else. It is the sensible way to spend a limited budget on a recliner.
• Your own fabric — bring it, we will build with it, and we will tell you honestly if it will not survive a seat.
• Carving — a traditional carved frame to your own drawing. Forty days of chisel work and worth every one of them.

How a made-to-order job runs

1. Send a photograph of the room on WhatsApp with a rough measurement. This costs you nothing and takes two minutes.
2. We reply with a suggestion and a figure. Usually the same day, always within one working day.
3. Site measurement inside the valley, free, including the staircase — which is where large sofas actually go wrong.
4. Written specification. Model, exact dimensions, fabric name and batch, foam densities, leg finish, price and date. You sign this, not a verbal agreement.
5. 50% advance, and the fabric is reserved from one roll that day.
6. Frame photograph sent to you before it is covered, so you can see what is inside your sofa. Come and push it yourself if you prefer.
7. Delivery, installation and the ledger label, with the balance paid on delivery.

What we will say no to

We will not build a seat cushion in dhaka or in any cloth that cannot take seat abrasion. We will not put silk-look velvet into a café or a hotel. We will not fit a hand-tufted back in a fabric that will pucker rather than pleat. And we will not promise a hand-carved frame in two weeks. In each case we will show you why on a sample, and suggest the thing we would put in our own house.
