Sofa-cum-Beds made in Nepal
A sofa-cum-bed is the most demanding thing a small workshop can build, because it has to be two pieces of furniture and it is usually judged as neither. Most of the ones sold in Nepal fail in one of exactly two places, and once you know both, you can inspect any sofa-cum-bed in any showroom in ten seconds.
The first failure is the mechanism. Stamped light steel, riveted rather than bolted, screwed into softwood. It works beautifully for the first hundred openings and then begins to twist, and once a fold-out mechanism has twisted, nothing brings it back. Ask the shop to open and close it in front of you five times in a row and watch whether the two halves still meet flush. Ours is bolted steel carried directly on a seasoned sal frame, and every single unit is opened and closed fifty times in the workshop before it is allowed to leave.
The second failure is the foam. A sofa-cum-bed is a bed for somebody — usually a parent, an in-law or a cousin, usually for a week at a time — and soft sofa foam collapses into a valley under a sleeping adult. We build both RP Nidra models in 40-density mattress-grade foam right through.
There are two versions and they suit genuinely different households. RP Nidra Fold opens upward at seat height into a 190 by 130 centimetre double, which is the right choice when the guest is elderly, because there is no low bed to climb out of. RP Nidra Draw pulls out from underneath and has a real storage drawer behind it — 180 by 60 by 20 centimetres, big enough for two quilts and two pillows, which solves the problem nobody mentions in the showroom: where the bedding actually lives.
