The Karigar Ledger
Every sofa that leaves this workshop carries a small label with a serial number and a QR code. Type that number in below and you will see who built your sofa, the exact fabric roll and foam batch it came from, and how much warranty you have left.
It is not a marketing page. It is our actual production record, opened up to the person who paid for the sofa. We built it because a customer came back wanting the same sofa her parents owned and we had to search three paper registers to find it — and when we did, the karigar who made it remembered building it, but his name was nowhere in the book.
Why we did this
There is a trust problem in Nepali furniture and everybody in the trade knows it. Search online and you will find video after video from people who paid an advance and got something else, or got nothing. Photographs cannot answer that fear, because photographs are the easiest thing in the world to fake.
A production record is harder to fake, because it has to be true on the day the sofa was built, by a person with a name, from a fabric roll with a batch code. The ledger also does four practical jobs: it lets us match an extension order two years later, it tells us exactly what foam to use for a refill in year six, it settles a warranty question with a record instead of an argument, and it puts the maker's name where the shop's name usually goes.
On naming the maker
We were asked, fairly, whether putting a karigar's name on a label honours him or uses him. Our position: every karigar chooses whether their name appears and can take it off at any time; the record names the person who actually did the work, not the most photogenic member of the team; and on carved pieces both the carver and the upholsterer are named, because both built it. For the workshop — printing the labels
The QR code on every label is generated by this website, in the browser, with no internet connection and no third-party service. Look up any serial number and use the print button on the record; that printed sheet is the label. Nothing about your customers' records ever leaves your own hosting.
