3+2+1 Sofa Sets made in Nepal
The 3+2+1 is still the single most common sofa purchase in Nepal, and there is a good reason for it that has nothing to do with fashion.
A Nepali living room has to do two jobs. On an ordinary evening it seats three or four people who live there. On a Saturday, or during Dashain, or when a relative arrives from the village without telephoning first, it has to seat eight without anybody standing awkwardly near the door. Six seats split across three pieces solves that in a way a single large sofa cannot, because the single-seaters can be turned towards a conversation, moved apart, or pulled in from another room.
Why we build a set as one job. The most common fault we see in sets bought elsewhere is not a broken frame — it is a two-seater that is half a shade lighter than the three-seater. That happens when the pieces are made at different times from different rolls of cloth. Every RP set is cut from one roll, with the legs turned from one batch of timber and polished together. It costs us slightly more in fabric wastage and it is the reason our sets still look like a set after five years.
What NPR 68,000 buys. That is our starting figure for a complete six-seat set: a seasoned sal frame joined with mortise-and-tenon corners, 32-density seat foam over a 40-density support layer, double-needle top stitch, and a standard cotton-linen from the library. Moving up towards a lakh and fifteen buys you jacquard, velvet or leather on the centre piece, deeper seats, or a longer three-seater.
Where the compact 3+1+1 wins. In a 2BHK flat under about eleven feet on the short side, the two-seater is usually the piece that ruins the room — it takes a whole wall and cannot be moved. The 3+1+1 seats five in noticeably less floor space, and the two singles can go anywhere. We suggest this to perhaps a third of the couples who come to us asking for a 3+2+1, and most of them take it.
