Modular & Block Sofas made in Nepal
A modular sofa is not a style. It is a decision about how long you expect to stay where you are living.
Roughly half the young households we build for in the Kathmandu Valley are renting, and most of them will move at least once in the next five years. A fixed L-shape does not survive that well. It was measured for a room that no longer exists, it has to be carried down a staircase it was never designed for, and by the second move something on it is broken. A modular sofa is built for exactly this life. Ours comes as 80 by 80 centimetre blocks — you buy between three and seven of them, and each block is a complete, independently upholstered unit with its own frame, its own foam and its own legs.
What that actually gives you. In a long room you line the blocks up as a five-seater. In a square room you turn two of them and you have an L. In a new flat with a different shape you rearrange them in an afternoon with no tools. When your household grows you buy two more blocks in the same fabric, and because we hold your fabric batch on the Karigar Ledger, the new blocks match the old ones rather than nearly matching them.
The part that matters most in year six. On any ordinary sofa, one worn-out seat means the whole sofa looks worn out. On this one, the block that took the daily punishment can be re-covered or replaced on its own for a fraction of the cost of a new sofa. We have re-covered single blocks for customers three and four years after delivery and put them straight back into the same set.
Covers come off. Every block has a removable, machine-washable cover as standard, not as an upgrade. With small children in the house this is not a luxury, and it is the single most requested feature we have added in the last three years.
Honest limitations. Blocks can shift apart slightly on a polished floor — we supply connecting clips, and they work, but you will occasionally re-clip them. A modular sofa also does not have the single continuous line of a well-made fixed L, so if you want a sofa that looks like one sculpted object, buy the RP Newa L instead and we will tell you so. And per seat, modular is not the cheapest way to sit down; you are paying for the ability to change your mind later.
