In Jhalak's words
This is the piece we are proudest of and the one we sell least often, which is exactly why it stays in the catalogue. The frame is hand-carved seasoned sal, pegged rather than screwed, with the lattice and rosette motifs that anyone who has walked through Patan or Bhaktapur will recognise from a window frame.
What we have changed is the comfort. Traditional carved seating in Nepal was beautiful and punishing. Ours carries 36-density loose cushions on a firm base pad, so it can be sat on for a whole evening rather than admired from across the room.
Carving time depends entirely on the pattern you choose. A simple lattice takes forty days; a full rosette-and-vine panel takes fifty-five. We will show you the pattern book, quote the exact figure, and then leave the carver alone to do it properly.
Every Newari Kala carries the carver's name on the Karigar Ledger label, not just the upholsterer's.
“This one is not just a sofa. It is a piece of the valley, and I want the man who carved it to be named on it.”— Jhalak Bahadur Khatri, proprietor

Delivery and warranty, in plain language
Free delivery inside Ring Road, quoted honestly at cost anywhere else in Nepal. Fifty per cent advance when you sign the written specification, balance on delivery — and the specification lists the model, exact size, fabric name and batch, foam densities, leg finish and date, so there is nothing left to remember or argue about.
Five years on the frame and joinery. Five years on foam collapse. One year on stitching, zips and mechanisms. If something goes wrong, send a photograph and your ledger serial number to 9849239091 on WhatsApp — that is the whole claim process. Your fabric is reserved from the same roll for six months, so a matching extra piece actually matches.

Questions people ask about the RP Newari Kala
Yes, by one carver, with chisels, in this workshop. Come and watch — it is the best twenty minutes you will spend before buying furniture.
More comfortable than traditional carved seating, because we use 36-density loose cushions on a firm base. Less comfortable than a Lawson. That is the truthful answer.
Yes, from a pattern book, or bring a photograph of a window or door you love and we will quote for matching it.
Because carving cannot be hurried without showing. A rushed panel has shallow, uneven cuts and it is visible forever.
Not if it is properly seasoned, which is why we only use timber that has been in our racks for at least a year. Oil it once a year and it will outlive all of us.
Yes. A natural oiled finish shows the grain and the tool marks beautifully, and a lot of younger buyers prefer it to the dark polish.
