In Jhalak's words

A camelback has a curved back rail that rises in the centre, and every part of building it is harder than a straight sofa: the rail is laminated and clamped, the padding has to be shaped to the arch, and the piping has to follow the curve without a single pucker.

It is a formal object and it belongs in a formal room — the drawing room that is kept slightly tidy, where guests are received. Paired with hand-carved sal legs it reads close to the classic carved sofas that older Nepali households remember, but with proper modern foam and a frame that will not creak.

This is the sofa where we most often recommend jacquard. The pattern and the arch belong together, and a plain cloth on a camelback can look strangely bare.

Thirty-two to forty days, because the curved rail has to be laminated, clamped and left to set before anything else can happen.

“Look at the piping where it climbs the arch. If it is smooth, the sofa is right.”— Jhalak Bahadur Khatri, proprietor

The build

Foam

36-density seat; shaped back padding over a curved rail

Frame

Seasoned sal with a laminated curved back rail

Joinery

Mortise-and-tenon; carved legs doweled and pinned

Stitch

Piped along the arch; show-wood edge

Ask us for an offcut of the actual foam going into your sofa and we will hand it to you. Come to the workshop and push the bare frame with your own hands before it is covered — most people who do that stop worrying.

Delivery and warranty, in plain language

Free delivery inside Ring Road, quoted honestly at cost anywhere else in Nepal. Fifty per cent advance when you sign the written specification, balance on delivery — and the specification lists the model, exact size, fabric name and batch, foam densities, leg finish and date, so there is nothing left to remember or argue about.

Five years on the frame and joinery. Five years on foam collapse. One year on stitching, zips and mechanisms. If something goes wrong, send a photograph and your ledger serial number to 9849239091 on WhatsApp — that is the whole claim process. Your fabric is reserved from the same roll for six months, so a matching extra piece actually matches.
